TRAIL

DOUG SCOTT 1941-2020 • THE MOUNTAINEERING WORLD SAYS GOODBYE TO ONE OF ITS GREATEST

What Doug Scott meant to you • Many Trail readers met Doug or attended his lectures, and many more were inspired by him. Here’s what you had to say about this legend of mountaineering…

A FESTIVAL OF FIRSTS • As befits such a pioneering climber, Doug Scott made a huge number of first ascents during his mountaineering career. Below you’ll find just some of his key ‘first’ achievements.

MOUNTAIN PHOTO OF THE YEAR YOUR WINNERS • The mountains were a saviour for many of us in 2020, which makes those images that have managed to capture a piece of that magic even more of a joy. But which has been crowned the UK’s greatest mountain photo of 2020?

Why we all need to keep walking • As Trail’s Mountains for the Mind campaign turns two years old, the need to get outdoors for the benefit of your mental health has never been greater.

WHY I WALK • Lisa Wells Lives on the North Wales coast, where she spends her days outside as much as possible, exploring the local mountains and coast with her dogs Billy and The Beast. She’s also an Ordnance Survey #GetOutside champion and an ambassador for Snowdonia National Park.

In search of shorties and skydancers

Out there • YOUR MOUNTAIN SNAPS & TALES FROM THE TRAILS

ARE YOU WALKING THE HEIGHT OF EVEREST THIS YEAR? • Last year, despite some pretty unique obstacles (yes we’re talking to you, global pandemic!) thousands of you still managed to bag 8848m of ascent in a single year of hillwalking. Here some of those amazing challengers look back at their personal highlights from 2020, and also share their plans for smashing the 2021 challenge…

LiVE THE MOUNTAIN LiFE • RUN A HOSTEL | SHOOT THE MOUNTAINS GET QUALIFIED | WRITE ABOUT YOUR HIKES MOVE TO THE HILLS | PLAN EXPEDITIONS

INTO THE UNKNOWN • How big is the difference between walking up mountains in summer and climbing them in winter? James Forrest heads high into Lakeland’s frozen Northern Fells to find the answer.

MAKE-BELIEVE MOUNTAINS • Looks like a mountain. Feels like a mountain. Only difference is, it’s not raining. Trail escapes to the rugged coast of the Llyn Peninsula in search of some sunshine on a rainy Snowdonia day.

THE FINAL FRONTIER • What does it take to bag one of mainland Britain’s most northern mountains? We sent our trusty photographer on an epic mission of precision planning to find out.

SKYE HIGH • To celebrate Trail’s 30th year we’re dusting off our archives each month to resurface a favourite mountain adventure from the past three decades. The latest instalment dates back to 1997 and a daring ascent of Skye’s Inaccessible Pinnacle – the second highest peak on the Cuillin Ridge, and the true high point of Scotland’s hardest Munro. As if the rock-climb to its 986m summit and abseil back to safety weren’t enough, we also decided to sleep on the ridge... and do it all unguided.

WHERE HAS WINTER GONE? • Climate change is threatening mountain life as we know it, so Trail spoke to four experts to help understand the threats facing our uplands.

WHAT SPECIES ARE AT RISK?

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
