Vogue Australia

EDITOR’S LETTER

The visionary • Bernie Leser, Vogue Australia’s inimitable founder, is remembered and revered by his son David Leser and former colleague Jonathan Newhouse.

Year of wonders • British author and curator Terence Pepper is an expert on Norman Parkinson, the photographer who captured Vogue Australia’s first cover in 1959. Revisiting that time, Pepper discovered the year was a fortuitous one not only for the magazine, but for the legendary man behind the camera, too.

Remembering Norman Parkinson

From the editor’s desk • Vogue Australia has been helmed by an impressive coterie of women, beginning with British journalist Rosemary Cooper, who turned what was originally designed as a supplement to British Vogue into a stand-alone magazine in 1959. The editors who followed were all determined to make their mark, both in fashion and beyond.

THE FUTURE SIXTY • 2019 has a mood all its own, with new voices joining the traditional choruses to create a better, bolder future. Here, we sing the praises of the country’s greatest agitators, those who are set to define the coming years – 60 for the next 60. By Alice Birrell.

Hand-picked • Birthdays require occasion dressing, and 60 years of Vogue Australia calls for pièces de résistance every woman should own. These will endure in a wardrobe for every turn around the sun.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS • In her role as a talent-spotter, mentor and now chief critic for Vogue.com, Sarah Mower has spent three decades writing about fashion and discovering the next big things. Vogue sustainability editor at large Clare Press tracks down the renowned British journalist to discuss together where the industry is heading.

The decade-makers • Behind great Australian wardrobes are even greater women. We celebrate the pioneering designers who captured the spirit of their times and went on to define our national style identity. Each of them have had a hand in shaping what we wear, yet each have a character all their own. They have defined a chapter in Australian fashion history, serving up clothes that were created for our lifestyle and reflected the rapidly shifting social sands. Here, they revisit their apogees, when they understood change was afoot and acted on instinct.

HAPPY 60TH BIRTHDAY, VOGUE AUSTRALIA • From one of the country’s leading fashion and beauty institutions to another, David Jones salutes Vogue as we celebrate 60 years at the forefront of Australian style.

This is Australia • Our contemporary design greats are all tied to home, but all see it differently. Distance, curiosity in conquering it, the landscape, the people – their traits are as diverse as the country we live in. Through vestiges and talismans, their design language is told.

Remembering Richard Bailey • Photographer Richard Bailey worked with Vogue for more than three decades, helping to establish the international careers of Australian models such as Sarah O’Hare, Kristy Hinze and Nicole Trunfio. Gentle and easygoing with a wonderful sense of humour, his death in 2010 at the age of 52 was keenly felt. His wife Gillian, son Jasper and former agent Jo Sinclair share their memories of his time at Vogue.

Guiding spirit • June McCallum, a former Vogue editor who boasts a 17-year-long tenure in the job, forged a special bond with her protégé, Karin Upton Baker, the magazine’s former beauty editor and writer-turned-fashion executive. Here, the...
