VOGUE EDITOR’S LETTER

Vive la différence • With the emergence of a new ‘woke’ generation comes a tendency to cancel people out if they express a difference of opinion. But, as Elizabeth Colman explores, creating meaningful change is achieved through respectful debate, not shutting others down.

FRESH START • The spirit of summer is laidback and low-key – a little simplification and a whole lot of lightness. Clean lines, cool linen and feather-light volumes that can be shed at the beach and then thrown on for the bar are non-negotiables. Add in updates via cropped singlets, lace and shorts that leave room to breathe. Life’s complicated enough: take it breezy.

BLANC CANVAS • The white dress is no longer a simple mainstay. With a cleansing power, it is a shortcut to dressing with feeling.

The great revolution • The past decade has proved to be one of the most transformative ever. In 2020, fashion emerges anew, having undergone a metamorphosis that has changed everything.

MODEL CITIZEN • A spontaneous decision to attend a casting call launched breakout model Cameron Stephens onto the fashion runways. Now, she is paving the way for young talents like her to do the same.

WOMAN OF THE HOUR • The richness of tobacco-brown leather and the weight of a red-gold-beaded bezel equals a timepiece with presence. An heirloom to keep time in a new decade.

Go lightly • Having a label now means facing a question: why produce more clothes? Maggie Hewitt, of consciously made label Maggie Marilyn, considers the answer.

Social fabric • Purpose is a buzzword, but what does it really mean in fashion? Clare Press considers the new breed of designers and brands in the business of giving back.

COOL TO BE KIND • These Australian labels all have purpose behind the product.

IN COMMON • Introducing her new label Common Hours, Amber Symond offers a brave new proposition for the age-old robe. Wear it anywhere, but don’t put it to bed.

ALL FOR ONE • The height of summer is always welcomed with a ripple of excitement, especially when this season’s maillots are involved. Allow the bikini time in the shade, and slip into an all-flattering, form-fitting one-piece.

LUCY FOLK • We ask creative talent to mine their inspirations and curate their world through style. Lucy Folk, founder and creative director of her eponymous brand, shares hers.

Come together • Australia’s foothold in Hollywood is stronger than ever, thanks to an organisation that continues to support our most talented exports and recognise them with an annual awards ceremony in Los Angeles.

BEC PARSONS • Australian photographer Bec Parsons is used to foregrounding the energy of her subjects in incisive imagery with warmth and intimacy. With the release of her second photography book, Parsons shares the art and fashion works that have informed her own world view.

Belle of the ball • Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s hit show Fleabag made her the toast of Hollywood and earnt her six Emmys at last year’s awards. The writer and actor speaks exclusively to Vogue about her new book, which includes scripts, stage directions and never-before-seen commentary.

Public eye • Summer festivals in Sydney, Perth and Adelaide this year are both a feast of culture and a hotbed of social issues. Jane Albert lifts the curtain on the 2020 line-up.

Absolute positivity • Ahead of her appearances at FOMO...
