Smoothies

Editoŕs NOTE

Welcome to SMOOTHIES 101 • HOW TO USE THIS ISSUE: Whipping up a wide range of flavorful smoothies is simple with our recipes. Most make two, but some serve only one or as many as four. Each batch is limited by the capacity of your blender, so to serve more people, you'll have to make additional batches, rinsing out the blender between each. The bonus of making a whole recipe for only one person is that you have some to freeze for later (see our make-ahead guide on p. 11).

EQUIPMENT • Only one piece of equipment is essential for making a smoothie: a blender. But a few other pieces of gear can make your experience more effcient and enjoyable. Here’s what we use in the Test Kitchen.

INGREDIENTS • A smoothie recipe is merely a template. Customize the ingredients to your taste or to what you have on hand.

HOW TO FREEZE FRUIT

MAKE-AHEAD METHODS • Most smoothies can be made ahead of time. Keeping portions on hand speeds breakfast or snack time, and these techniques ensure a tasty smoothie no matter when you eat.

Citrus SHINE • Bright, zingy oranges and grapefruits lend a vibrant kick to your morning smoothie.

TROPICAL Inspiration • When the heat is on, cool down with these refreshing island-style smoothies.

KICK-START Your Day • Need a boost in the morning? These smoothies have a dose of caffeine for an extra jolt.

Glorious GREENS • Adding leafy greens and herbs to your smoothies is one of the best ways to get more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Start with these delicious blends.

MAKE & FREEZE

GO Nuts • For nutty flavors and to bump up the protein, turn to nuts, seeds, and nut butters (think beyond peanut butter).

ALL Spiced UP • A sprinkle of spices not only adds a burst of flavor but also ups nutrition by providing much-needed minerals and antioxidants.

BOWLED Over • Go from blender to bowl with these thick and creamy smoothies. Create beautiful meals by artfully topping them with fresh and wholesome ingredients.

TART & TANGY • When your life needs more balance, pour yourself one of these ideal blends of zippy and creamy.

SMOOTHIE Pops • Grab a freezer pop mold and transform your favorite smoothie into a frozen treat for any time of day.

SO HAPPY TOGETHER • When you're behind on getting your five-a-day, reach for one of these veggie and fruit combos.

A CUE FROM THE Dessert TABLE • Dessert in a glass? You bet! These smoothies are the ultimate indulgence.
